Camau – Welsh Language Learning for the Childcare, Early Years and Playwork Sector

A scheme to help workers in the childcare, early years and playwork sector to learn Welsh and improve their language skills is available.

The Camau scheme, devised by the National Centre for Learning Welsh, will enable practitioners in the sector to use more of the Welsh language with children in order to give them a good start on their journey towards becoming fluent Welsh speakers. This links with the Welsh Government’s commitment to create a million Welsh speakers by 2050 and to provide 30 hours a week of free early education and childcare for working parents through the Childcare Offer for Wales.

PACEY Cymru are working with The National Centre for Learning Welsh and Cwlwm partners to provide the sector with tailor made Welsh language training.

  • There is firstly a Welsh Awareness online module.  This is a resource for childcare practitioners that would like to gain an understanding of the benefits of using Welsh. This will take you 20-30 minutes to complete and is good to support you in evidencing to CIW how you understand the requirements around the Welsh language in Wales. Once you have completed the module you will receive an email with your certificate.
  • PACEY Cymru are working with the National Centre for Learning Welsh (NCfLW) to offer an Online Self Study course at Entry level (suitable for beginners, and those who have completed the Taster Courses).   The course is fully funded and consists of approximately 20 hours of independent learning relevant to childcare and early years.  The course should take approximately 10 weeks to complete and support is available from PACEY Cymru during the course.
  • Going forward Camau will offer five courses at different levels of fluency: Entry, Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced for the early years and childcare sector and Entry level for the Play sector.  Further information on these will follow.

PACEY Cymru will provide mentoring and after-care support to enable practitioners to gain confidence in their use of Welsh.

The scheme is being delivered on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh by Sbectrwm in collaboration with the University of Wales Trinity Saint Davids, Coleg Cambria and the Cwlwm partnership.

If you are a home based childcare provider in Wales (childminder or nanny) or a PACEY member who would like to access funded Welsh language training or for further information please contact PACEY Cymru on paceycymru@pacey.org.uk or contact Camau.

Gwiriwr- Learn Welsh Level Checker

A good place to start to work out your current level of Welsh language skills would be to complete the Gwiriwr toolkit that consists of four quizzes which includes reading, writing, speaking and listening elements. A result of your Welsh language skills will be given which will help you decide training that would be most suitable to your language skills and needs.

The Learn Welsh Level Checker (Gwiriwr) is a diagnostic tool specifically designed to help the Childcare, Early years and Playwork workforce to accurately identify their current level of Welsh language competency in order to receive recommendations for what steps the individual can take next to progress with their Welsh language skills. This is done by completing activities on reading, writing, listening and speaking.

If you are a home based childcare provider in Wales (childminder or nanny) or a PACEY member who would like to access funded Welsh language training or for further information please contact PACEY Cymru on paceycymru@pacey.org.uk

Why participate?

With Welsh Government’s vision of reaching a million Welsh language speakers in Wales by 2050, there is much more emphasis on the Welsh language being introduced to children and babies as early as possible in order to set the foundations for their learning.

Identifying your current Welsh language skill level and undertaking training will help you develop your skills and practice around Welsh in your setting for the future to:

  • Give you reassurance of your current Welsh language skills and increased confidence to use your Welsh skills in your setting
  • Provide evidence to use in your Quality of Care Report around planning and improvement of Welsh language development in your setting in line with CIW requirements and the Active Offer
