Today (5 December) His Majesty’s Chief Inspector Sir Martyn Oliver has published Ofsted’s annual report for the year 2023/24.
For early years and childcare, the annual report highlights:
- Access to early education overall has decreased in the last four years and this is spread unequally across England, with many families in ‘childcare deserts’ linked to higher child poverty rates.
- The sector has significant workforce challenges around the recruitment and retention of skilled staff and this has an impact on ensuring consistent and high quality provision (particularly for vulnerable children and those with SEND)
- Despite the vast majority of early years providers setting children up for a good start at school, some children are starting reception behind with language, communication and social skills.
The report also highlights challenges around the SEND system, with the number of children with SEND increasing whilst support and resources are lacking. It highlights the importance of early years providers having the right support in place for children with SEND to set them up for positive future outcomes.
Ofsted published the results of its Big Listen consultation in September, setting out many reforms to inspection to reduce pressures on staff, and its Best Start in Life research series aiming to ensure the best outcomes for children.
