Ofsted Big Listen

March 8, 2024

Ofsted chief will put disadvantaged children first, as he launches ‘Big Listen’ to hear from parents and professionals.

Ofsted’s new Chief Inspector will pledge to put the interests of disadvantaged children at the heart of future reforms, as he launches a major public consultation on Ofsted’s work.

The Big Listen is an opportunity for Ofsted to hear from the professionals they work with, like teachers and other educators, carers, employers and social workers, and the people they work for: parents, carers, children and learners.

Their consultation asks about:

  • how they report inspection findings
  • how they carry out inspections
  • how they can have a positive impact on the sectors they inspect
  • what they need to do to be a world-class inspectorate and regulator, trusted by parents, children and the sectors they work with

Ofsted want to hear your views on the priorities that are important to you.

The questions highlight the areas that they want to hear from you about and will inform their thinking going forward. They want to know your views on the future direction of Ofsted.

The Big Listen is more than just this consultation. Ofsted have also commissioned research through focus groups with parents and education/care professionals, and will be holding a programme of events to speak directly to the different providers they inspect and regulate.

They will analyse your responses and set out their plans later this year.

In his first major speech since becoming Chief Inspector, Sir Martyn wants the Big Listen to mark a new chapter in Ofsted’s relationship with the sector:

“I hope the steps I’ve taken in my first 2 months show you that I’m serious. Serious about Ofsted doing better. Serious about making a difference. And serious about working with the sector to make sure all children have the best possible education, care, and life chances.”
