New Health Protection guidance in Wales/Canllawiau Diogelu Iechyd newydd yng Nghymru

March 1, 2024

Public Health Wales’ Health Protection Team provide specialist public health advice on infectious disease control and deliver an All Wales Acute Response Service known as AWARe. The AWARe/ health protection team have recently launched their own Health Protection website page which includes the new guidance, contact details and key resources for childcare and educational settings.

New infection, prevention and control guidance has been published, and is now called the Health protection in children and young people’s settings including education. This now replaces the Infection, Prevention and Control Guidance for childcare settings (0-5) 2019 guidance.

Where can I find the new guidance?

The new web page Guidance for Childcare, preschool and educational settings, includes all the relevant guidance and information in one place.

What is new?

The Health protection in children and young people’s settings including education has been adapted from a UK document of the same name to promote a four nations approach with added Wales relevant links and guidance as necessary.

The old version of the Infection, prevention and control guidance in comparison to  the new  document  was  based mainly  for 0-5 years  settings.  The new document is  very  generic  to  apply  standard IPC practice and guidance across  all  child care and educational  settings.

Both versions of the documents are very similar with them both covering the following:

  • National  standards in Wales
  • Risk  assessment
  • Health protection and Environmental teams
  • What  infections are, their transmission routes and who is at  risk
  • How to  prevent infections

The new Health protection in children and young people’s settings including education document also includes:

  • There is more emphasis on Immunisation and how settings can assist in promoting immunisation.
  • There is a more descriptive section on management of outbreaks.
  • There is a section for specific settings and populations including additional learning needs, residential settings, preschool, travel health, sexual health including period poverty, outdoor learning and water based activities.
  • The new document references the available tool kits including the All Wales Infection Prevention and Control Audit Tool;  cleaning schedules and outbreak  management documents.

In addition, the All Wales Infection Prevention and Control Audit Tool and examples of cleaning schedules, Outbreak record and Checklist of measures to use during an outbreak have also been reviewed, updated and are now available in Welsh.
