Labour consider plans to fund new nurseries in primary schools

January 5, 2024

The Labour party is reportedly considering funding more primary school-based nursery places across England and has tasked the former Ofsted head Sir David Bell with finding new ways to tackle the shortage in childcare.

With ongoing capacity, staffing and affordability concerns, the potential plans would see nursery classes installed in primary schools that do not currently have early years provision.

Other details have yet to be set out, but Labour says the policy will be properly funded and Bell will advise on potential solutions, with detailed policies set out nearer the election.

Childcare and early education could become a major battleground at the next election, with Labour set to criticize the Conservatives for what it says is a lack of workable solutions.
